About Deconstruction Books

A deconstruction book or altered book is the process of taking a pre-existing book, magazine, or any published material and manipulating it into an experimental sketchbook.  The advantage is in working with pages that already have images and text on them. To me there is nothing more uninspiring than white smooth paper.

All the examples on this site were created over several years; some are teacher examples and some are student examples. I have made over 15 different deconstruction books.  I use them in my high school art classroom constantly.  Most books have had pages glued together with a glue stick, two or three depending on the paper weight, then the pages are primed with gesso or latex flat house paint.
